Dr Denise Crossan

Dr. Denise Crossan was appointed as Swarthmore College’s Director of Community and Strategic Initiatives in July 2021. Working in the President’s Office, Denise collaborates with colleagues across campus to help develop and oversee strategic initiatives that seek to strengthen our community and support the College’s mission.

Before this role, she was the Eugene Lang Visiting Professor for Issues of Social Change in Swarthmore from Sept 2009-2015, teaching and collaborating with Peace and Conflict Studies and the Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility. In 2017 she created and managed the Social Innovation Lab within the Lang Center, and she continues to oversee the Lab’s activities.

Before joining Swarthmore College, Dr. Crossan was an Assistant Professor in Social Entrepreneurship at Trinity College Dublin’s Business School, and she remains an Adjunct Visiting Professor for TCD. She is a member of Catalyst 2030, a global movement of social entrepreneurs and social innovators from all sectors who share the common goal of creating innovative, people-centric approaches to attain the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. In addition, she has acted as a member of the European Commission’s Groupe d’experts de la Commission sur l’entrepreneuriat social (GECES) representing Ireland. An advocate of Engaged Scholarship, much of her teaching and work has focused on social innovation, social entrepreneurship, and social enterprise in a post-conflict context.
